Teeth Whitening

Close up comparison of before and after teeth whitening treatment on a patient's smileYour smile can say a lot about you. One aspect of your smile is the brightness of your teeth. Teeth can become discolored over time, and sometimes even lose their luster. Many celebrities have made their bright white smiles even brighter, which has sparked many people to also take advantage of this cosmetic dentistry procedure. Our experts here at Kaw Valley Family Dental ensure our patients get the whitening results they are looking for.

Should I Have for In-Office Teeth Whitening?

If you're thinking of getting your teeth whitened, you're probably weighing your options: Do I go with in-office whitening or buy one of those at-home kits? At Kaw Valley Family Dental we recommend in-office whitening. In-office teeth whitening works the fastest, is the most effective, and you will see results immediately.

In-office teeth whitening uses either a light or laser to activate the whitening agent to enhance its effects. During your appointment, we will apply a protective gel or rubber shield to your gums to protect them and keep them from getting irritated. Then we will apply the peroxide-based bleaching agent to your teeth and use a light or laser to activate it for about 15 minutes. The process may be repeated several times until your desired whitening results are achieved. Most people see results after just one visit.

Does Teeth Whitening Improve Oral Health?

Teeth whitening is a simple method of improving oral health. In fact, it is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures. Since it involves the application of bleaching agents and cleanings, the process can potentially remove a number of harmful bacteria that may otherwise erode your tooth enamel if left uncleansed.

What Should I Expect After A Teeth Whitening Procedure?

Teeth whitening can cause some side effects including increased sensitivity of the teeth and irritation of the gums. It can also affect dental restorations such as crowns and fillings so they might need replacing after treatment. But even so, you should expect your smile to brighten and your oral hygiene to be improved.

How to Further Whiten Your Teeth After Whitening Treatments

Sometimes, even after a whitening treatment your teeth may not be as bright as you want them to be. You can further whiten your teeth by using home whitening products. If you decide to continue whitening your teeth, be advised that your teeth will only get whiter with each additional treatment. There is no way to predict how many treatments will be necessary to reach your desired level of whiteness. It's a good idea to plan on doing several treatments at least one week apart. If you develop tooth sensitivity or gum irritation during or after treatment, discontinue use and consult our dentist. Before using any treatments at home, speak with the dentist. We can also offer at-home whitening trays.
