Porcelain CrownIf you are looking to have a smile makeover, then it is likely that you have heard of porcelain crowns. This type of cosmetic dentistry has been used for decades in order to give people beautiful smiles. In fact, it is one of the most common forms of cosmetic dentistry today. You may wonder whether this is the right choice for you. Our care providers at Kaw Valley Family Dental can help you understand the main purpose of porcelain crowns and how they will benefit you in the long run. What are Porcelain Crowns?A porcelain crown is a cap that fits over an existing tooth to restore it to its original shape and size while improving its appearance. A crown is a good choice for correcting a misshapen tooth, a severely discolored or stained tooth, a broken tooth, or a filling that has become defective. It is also used to protect weak teeth from fracturing, hold together parts of a cracked tooth, restore the shape of worn-down teeth, and prevent further wear, or attach bridges. In other words, if your tooth is too damaged for fillings or veneers and needs more than just bonding, then it may be time to get a porcelain crown. Why Are Porcelain crowns the top choice for most dentists?Porcelain crowns are the most popular choice for most dentists. Porcelain is also highly desired by patients because of the natural look and feel of the material. Because they look so natural, they are often chosen for front teeth crowns. Porcelain crowns are also often used when matching the crown to your existing teeth. Apart from that, porcelain has one other major advantage: this material can withstand more chewing forces than other types of restorations. Porcelain is durable, which means porcelain crowns can last for years to come without having to replace them. They will still serve you for several years if you properly take care of them. How Are Porcelain Crowns Installed?Porcelain crowns are installed in two visits to our dental facility. During the first visit, the dentist prepares the tooth by removing much of its outer layer. The dentist must remove part of the existing layer because porcelain crowns are thicker than natural teeth, and they need sufficient room in order to fit properly. After the tooth is prepared, an impression of it is made and it's sent to a lab so that technicians can make a custom crown that fits perfectly into place over the damaged tooth. A temporary crown will be installed while you wait for your permanent crown to be made at the dental lab. In most cases, you'll only have to wait up to 10 days before your permanent crown comes back from the lab. Once it arrives, you'll return to our office for an appointment. The temporary crown will be removed and replaced with your new porcelain crown.
