Dental Exam

Older patient sitting in dental chair calmly discussing his oral health with dentistHave you been keeping up with your dental exams? They are essential for maintaining oral health. These appointments allow the dentist to find and treat small problems before they turn into bigger ones. This is why it is always crucial to speak to our dentist and know how often we would like to see you. At our Kaw Valley Family Dental practice, we look forward to helping you maintain fantastic oral health for years to come!

How Does a Dental Exam Improve Oral Health?

We have all heard that if you want to retain your oral health, you should brush your teeth every day. Brush twice a day but be gentle. If you use the wrong kind of toothpaste, it could damage your gums. But apart from that, you should make a point to see your dentist regularly to ensure there are no hidden problems in your teeth or gums. We can confidently say that oral examinations provide the dentist with an opportunity to curb the minor problems that might be developing in your mouth.

Dentists recommend a checkup at least twice a year

Dentists are medical professionals, and doctors often recommend regular checkups. Some people do better for months or years without a checkup, and if you're doing fine, you may not need one. But regular dental checkups are important for maintaining your oral health and preventing oral health issues from arising. We can diagnose problems like gum disease and oral cancer and treat them.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends patients visit the dentist twice a year, typically every six months. This allows us to examine your mouth, gums, and teeth, perform dental X-rays, as well as clean your teeth. Keeping plaque and tartar off of your teeth helps produce not just a lovely smile, but healthy teeth and gums, free of troubling issues like gum disease and tooth decay.

Who Should See A Dentist More Often?

If you have any medical conditions, such as diabetes or gum disease, we may want to see you more often. Patients with gum disease may need to come in every three to four months for periodontal maintenance and care - treatments like root planing and scaling - to keep their gums and teeth free from harmful plaque and bacteria.

If you are suffering from any dental issues, you may also require extra visits and treatments. Most of the time when we see signs of tooth decay or cavities, we tend to ignore it until we are faced with a severe toothache. However, regular visits to the dentist help prevent these types of conditions from flaring up, with no notice. It is always a good idea to have regular dental examinations, even when you do not have any dental problems.
