Tooth Extraction

Row of wooden tooth shapes, one of which is being pulled out of the row by dental pliersMost dental extractions are relatively painless. Though you might experience some bleeding and swelling, it takes only about a week for your gums to heal. Throughout the process your dentist will ensure you are comfortable, and will do this by using local anesthesia to make the experience less painful. You should also communicate to your dentist in case you feel any type of discomfort. Our dentists here at Kaw Valley Family Dental will make your dental experience comfortable and smooth.

Importance of Dental Extractions

It is important to consider tooth extraction if any of your teeth are severely damaged, and previous treatments such as dental fillings or root canals have not been able to save the tooth. Dental extractions help to preserve your other teeth by preventing infections in the adjacent teeth and gums.

Can Children Have Dental Extractions?

For younger children, an extraction may be necessary in order to prevent further problems with their teeth. They may have an infected tooth or have overcrowding in their mouth. Baby teeth are important to provide space for the adult teeth to come in. If we do need to remove any baby teeth, for whatever reason, we may recommend a space maintainer, to provide the needed space for the adult tooth to grow into.

Regular visits to the dentist are important, starting from an early age. Dental visits can be a frightening place at first, but with regular visits and children becoming familiar with our office and what a dental exam looks like, they will be more likely to want to come in and see the dentist. Some parents are hesitant to bring their children to the dentist, and as a result, some children have never been to the dentist by the time they have 10 or 12 teeth. In this case, it can make an extraction a more stressful experience than if they were already familiar with seeing the dentist.

What Signs Show I Need A Tooth Extraction?

Although it is often prescribed for patients with impacted wisdom teeth, dental extraction can also be recommended for a variety of other reasons like extreme decay and infection. It is important to remove teeth that are decaying or infected. In addition, impacted teeth that cannot grow into the mouth normally should be removed. Early removal can prevent damage to other teeth and the development of infection. Other conditions that may require extraction include advanced gum disease (periodontitis), malpositioned teeth, infected tooth roots, and teeth that are unable to properly emerge from the gums. In addition, people undergoing orthodontic treatment may need dental extraction to allow room for crowded or overlapping teeth to move into alignment.

How Will the Dentist Know if I Am Uncomfortable During the Extraction Procedure?

If you feel pain or discomfort during your tooth extraction, tell the dentist right away. You will be given several options to manage your discomfort. Your dentist may also use a different approach to loosen the tooth. For example, topical anesthetic can be applied to the area to numb it for continued extraction. Sometimes a local anesthesia can be used in addition to your sedative as needed. Your dentist will decide which is best for you. In rare cases, if local anesthesia does not work well enough, general anesthesia may be necessary.
